Doing ethnography in a transitional context / April 27, 2020 [Virtual Session]
Presentation by Qusai Anteet, followed by open discussion.
Session Chair: Reden Recio
This session discusses the challenges of conducting an ethnographic study in a complex context that is currently messed up with ideological, educational and political changes. Public schools are part of massive transformations occurring in Saudi Arabia. A key educational objective for the state is preparing students with ‘21st-century skills’ to compete at the global stage. Such aspirations are confronted with tensions between resistance and adaptation by the conservative culture, belief system and decision-making context. The research investigates the change in physical and social learning environments in public primary schools. The discussion will highlight ways of critically reading a transitional context to understand the alignment between educational aspirations and built schools.
