How informal settlers’ socio-economic traits shape flood adaptation / Jun 30, 2020 [Virtual Session]
Millions of urban poor are living in slum conditions in low-income countries. Often, governments in these countries are unable or unwilling to provide alternative housing or resettle residents to a safer place. In some cases, governments ignore informal settlements, or they evict them without other viable options for residents. Thus, informal settlers undertake adaptation measures to reduce hazard risks and improve their vulnerable situation. This SEED session will touch on how the socio-economic characteristics of informal settlers influence their flood adaptation practices as well as their capacity to deal with other adversities. The discussant will explain key empirical insights from a riverbank informal settlement in Kathmandu, Nepal.
